Tarot Major Arcana 15
The Devil

Overall meaning
Tarot cards The Devil represent addiction, being trapped or limited. That influences or forces beyond your control limit you and leave you powerless and victimized. However, this is only the illusion that The Devil creates. You are in control of your own destiny and are bound by nothing but your own attitudes and behavior.

Don’t give up and don’t give your power away. You don’t have to tolerate negativity, criticism, manipulation or abuse from anyone. There are always opportunities and there is always something positive you can do to improve your situation, no matter how hopeless things may seem on the surface.

The Devil is also an invitation to direct your focus to the true values of life. A call to be aware of how quickly we become overly concerned about material things, status or power. These are not things that make you truly fulfilled as a human being, so put your energy into the things that will.

Description
Here we see the Devil – half animal half human – with an animal head, horns and bat wings and claws instead of feet. Below him are two lovers – a woman and a man chained to the plinth on which the Devil sits. The two lovers have tied themselves to carnal love and material goods. They are no longer free to do as they please, but their hands are free, symbolizing that slavery to the Devil is a voluntary matter that consciousness can trigger.

If they want to have a happy life, they must free themselves from the status symbols – and each other. He stands for raw nature and sexuality. Around him is only black, which could indicate that they are in a cave. In his left hand he holds a burning torch and his right hand he holds up as a contrast between the real and the false hand. It may refer to how difficult it is to know true from false when dealing with the Devil.

Interpretation
The card primarily stands for obstacles, fears and blockages that, when removed, can release positive energy. It says something that it is time for us to face the devil or the shadow sides in ourselves. Dealing with and learning from our shadow sides is not necessarily pleasant, but there is an opportunity to discover great untapped and unexplored potential within ourselves.

The Devil represents sensuality and sexuality in all its guises. With this also the potent, creative force we all contain, which wants to be expressed with cheerfulness and tangibility. It is important that we follow what we are drawn towards in life or what inspires us professionally or personally.

The devil card does not represent evil as one might be led to believe because of the repulsive devil figure. But the card refers more closely to the untamed uncivilized aspect of ourselves and our psyche, which we often prefer to hide from others.

But when we look more closely at our lust for power, greed, shame, envy and sexual desires, we can free ourselves from some of the problems we thought we had. The experience of shame, for example, can be strong because it is connected to sexuality and passion, which one does not experience as natural and normal. Shame can also be linked to actions we have taken that we regret.

Keywords
Other words that describe the Devil are: temptation, obsession, sensuality, creative energy, power, addiction, imprisonment and humour. Dissatisfaction, depression, temptation, seduction, addiction, material attachments and a need to break free and confront something.

Numbers
The tarot card is associated with number 15 – which in numerology is often reduced to 6 (the sum of 1+6) which means that you must pay attention to these two numbers in relation to the challenge you are asking the tarot about.

Astrology
The card is linked to the astrological sign Capricorn. Capricorns are willing to look at inner questions, inner monsters or trolls.

Affirmation
I maintain my sense of humor in areas where I experience the devilish. I can be with my shadow sides and learn from them.
