The I Ching should be consulted with respect, as it is supposed to contain all the wisdom of the East. The individual lines of the hexagram are either stable or unstable - and an unstable line represents a line that "goes towards" its opposite. This means that for every hexagram there is a shadow hexagram, which is the hexagram that appears when all the unstable lines are turned to their opposites. This shadow hexagram represents the situation you are moving towards. 
For the interpretation of the I Ching, the description and image that the Book of Changes links to the hexagram are used, as well as the interpretation of the individual lines of the hexagram and its shadow hexagram.
