Tarot Major Arcana 6
The Lovers

Overall meaning
The Lovers is a call for you to learn to understand yourself, your own personal moral code and what you value in life. This will bring harmony and balance to your life. And make it easier for you to make decisions and choices. Find your own true point of view and you will achieve perfect union, harmony, love and great attraction.

Description
The Lovers shows Adam and Eve standing naked and side by side in a landscape. Adam stands before the Tree of Life, which bears twelve fruits, one for each of the signs of the zodiac. The sun and an angel hover above them. The angel symbolizes Cupid and reminds us of the two forms of love: love as passion and love as compassion. but it also seems that the angel is giving the couple his blessing.

Adam and Eve are faced with a choice: before the fall, or innocent childhood. But the unfolding of the senses and carnal love and sexuality lurk around the corner, symbolized by the snake in the tree of life behind Eve.

From the story in the Bible, Adam and Eve can be interpreted as being tempted and eating the forbidden fruit. They thereby choose sexuality and procreation, which makes them godlike in their ability to create new life. But just as it brought them the gift of life, their choice also brought them death, albeit with the possibility of spiritual immortality.

As you know, the apple in the tree of life represents the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, and the card is also a symbol of choice and non-choice. You have to free yourself from a previous relationship before you can wholeheartedly enter into another. For example, when a man frees himself from his mother and gives himself to his girlfriend. That is there is also an emotional choice associated with The Lovers.

Interpretation
This card has two main meanings. The first is about a love affair. The card can indicate a strong bond between two people, for example a working partnership and a love affair. The second meaning has to do with choice.

The questioner must make a difficult decision that will usually involve some sacrifice. A split between what you think is the right thing to do and what you want to do. The questioner may have to choose between two people, situations, or jobs, one offering financial benefits while the other fulfills creative needs.

The card refers to the consequences a hasty or ill-considered choice, regarding for example a relationship or a love affair, can have. But the choice or test is not only about love and romance. It can also be about a matter, a situation, a circumstance of great personal importance, which involves choices.

The card can also allude to a loss or disappointment, because when you choose one, you lose something else. Adam and Eve chose knowledge, but with it came death. Choosing love and passion can also bring vulnerability and pain.

Keywords
Other words that characterize the lovers are: love as a path to it, divine, attraction, union of opposites through love, unity, harmony, increased awareness through a relationship, partnership. The start of new love. A temptation or attraction is present.
