Five Swords
Overall meaning
Five Swords represent defeat, surrender, abandonment, serious conflict, stress and lack of communication. Within the Swords we have five cards that warn of hostility, aggression, intimidation and violence, and as such these cards can represent situations we hope never to encounter in our lives, e.g. crime, theft, bullying, abuse, assault, rape and murder.
However, these serious cards within Swords can also represent necessary action, the defense you will sometimes have to muster to protect yourself and your values. So these cards – including the tarot card Five Swords – can be seen as a call to action to deal precisely with defeat, conflict, etc.
Description
Five Swords shows a man, presumably a victor, holding or gathering swords. He holds three swords and two other swords lie on the ground by his side. Two other figures, perhaps the defeated ones, seem to be walking away from the man. They go down towards the water in the background. The clouds in the sky are jagged and menacing.
The card indicates that there is a need to recognize limitations and to work within the limitations that form your current situation. The image seems to reflect defeat and despair.
Interpretation
The card indicates fear of an ignominious defeat. It may suggest that a battle was won by dishonest means, and that the loser has to put up with, even if his pride takes a serious hit. In this way, the card can be seen as very positive, as it indicates that you are prepared to face your fear of failure.
And by seeing, understanding, accepting and letting go of the anxiety, you will be free. But still examine, for example, whether your fear of failure is due to a memory from the past (see here, for example, five years ago), which has damaged self-confidence and self-esteem.
The card symbolizes that due to experienced fear in thought you are constricted in body, emotions and mind, which means that your way of thinking becomes distorted and narrow-minded. You must deal with the realities and be as constructive and creative as possible to improve your situation.
Be careful not to forcefully impose solutions or behavior blindly, without having examined what or what kind of action is needed in the situation in question. You have to accept your limitations and blockages before any changes can happen.
